Phosphate Free Fertilizer-Is it as effective as phosphate containing fertilizer?

If I decide to use phosphate free fertilizer (to keep algae growth down in the near by pond) will my lawn and plants suffer? Is there something I can do to compensate for the loss of phosphate, or is that not necessary?
