My ph test is telling me that it 8.5 - 9.0?

but i have heard that the fish that i have in the tank wouldn't survive at that but they have done for about a year now i have siamese fighting fish, loaches, pleco, mollies, x-ray tetra. can i aume that the ph test is wrong and the ph level is fine if so does that mean that my new tank that it is also saying has a ph level of 8.5 - 9.0 is fine for a male betta or not. it has been set up for around 2 and half weeks.
